English defender Joe Gomez recently picked up another injury, and that has forced Jurgen Klopp to look for a defender in the transfer market.
In fact, the search for a new defender was carried out rather quickly, as Liverpool agreed a £4.2m fee Augsburg for Estonian international Ragnar Klavan.
According to German newspaper Bild, Klavan missed training yesterday due a back problem, but is still expected to undergo a medical examination today.
Reports in the English media suggest a deal for Klavan could be completed by Wednesday, but it’s very unlikely the player will play any part in the friendly against Huddersfield tomorrow night.
Klavan, however, is expected to take part in Liverpool’s pre-season tour to the United States, as they friendlies against Chelsea, AC Milan, and AS Roma.
It’s a mystery whether Klavan missed Augsburg training over a genuine back problem, in which case Liverpool may want to check it out, or a ‘back problem’ more related to an impending transfer.
