Naby Keita is yet to make his debut for Werder Bremen after joining them this summer following his departure from Liverpool.
Fussball News cover the midfielder today and manager Ole Werner on the matter as the player remains on the sidelines.
They explain that the Werder Bremen fans ‘had their first disappointment’ at the weekend before the defeat to FC Heidenheim.
Contrary to reports, Keita was not yet fit enough to make his debut for the German club after Werner had decided he was ‘still too far behind’ the rest of the squad.
“Of course, you can take a player with you to have him with you in the hotel or for two or three minutes if the course of the game allows it,” he said.
“It is not the case that after one week of team training, and not even completely, you take a player with you who has been injured for two months.”
That led to further disappointment, with Keita very much the big summer signing for the Bundesliga club after he left Liverpool on a free transfer.
His time at Anfield had been plagued by injuries and it seems they have followed him, but according to Werner this was “also not the responsibility of the player”.
Whether that’s a slight dig at Liverpool and how he was treated there is up for interpretation but what is clear is that the problems Keita had at Anfield aren’t gone yet, much to the disappointment of his new club.
