Ajax’s decision to sign Steven Bergwijn from Tottenham is ‘starting to become a bigger problem’ for the Dutch giants.
That’s according to Soccer News, who say the Dutchman is now the ‘biggest problem’ for manager Alfred Schreuder.
Bergwijn joined Ajax in a €31.25m deal from Tottenham in the summer following months of speculation about the Dutch side’s interest in him.
He enjoyed a strong start to life at his new club but has struggled to establish himself under Alfred Schreuder and be the player many thought he would be.
That continued last night as he put in a non-descript performance against Rangers in the Champions League, starting on the right but being substituted off in the 88th minute.
Finding a role for Bergwijn is a growing issue, according to Soccer News, who explain the decision to sign him from Tottenham is ‘starting to become a bigger problem’ than the lack of a prolific striker.
That’s because teammates Mohammed Kudus and Brian Brobbey are scoring goals and Steven Berghuis is enjoying an ‘increasingly emphatic role’ either from the right or in the number ten position.
That can’t be said for Bergwijn, who was signed as a ‘star player’ for the left but has been outshone by other players in the position.
The issue is that the club’s record signing can’t be left on the bench either, theoretically at least, but that is what is happening as he doesn’t ‘actually deliver what the team needs’.
He is not in ‘the greatest form’ and Schreuder is increasingly being put in a corner because other players are impressing and worthy of starting ahead of him.
The ‘biggest problem’ is whether he chooses between Dusan Tadic or Bergwijn, although it is probably neither as the other options are impressing.
Either way, the decision to sign Bergwijn from Tottenham is now very much being questioned, with the transfer yet to work out or prove worth it.
