Everton almost managed to complete a deal for Samu Chukwueze last summer, but the Toffees weren’t able to get the transfer over the line.
Sunday’s edition of AS reports the transfer was ‘close to crystallising’, but the player’s move to Goodison Park collapsed.
Today he’s expected to say ‘adios’ to Villarreal, and Everton are the only club who have their interest mentioned. However, it is pointed out that the player’s performances this season, especially a standout one against Real Madrid, could ‘open other doors’ for him.
The big hint there is that Chukwueze may now be able to attract a higher level of club than Everton. In theory that may be true, but in practice it takes clubs coming forward to try and make a deal happen.
With the attacker set to depart from Villarreal, and no destination yet secured, there’s no harm in Everton giving it another go. He was clearly tempted last year otherwise the transfer wouldn’t have come close to happening.
