Javier Manquillo’s transfer from Atletico Madrid to Sunderland is reportedly done. According to Mundo Deportivo, the player is expected to fly to England tonight so he can have his medical.
The 22-year-old is joining the Black Cats on a loan deal, but in case he makes more than 25 appearances this season, the English club will have to pay Atletico €16m for a permanent transfer.
This is Manquillo’s third straight loan, since he spent the 2014/15 season at Liverpool and the 2015/16 at Olympique Marseille. His year in France was reasonable, but Marseille didn’t buy him because the €25m clause was considered to be unaffordable for the club.
Mundo Deportivo says the Atletico fans are surprised he can’t get any chances at the club. Manquillo has a contract at the Vicente Calderón until 2018, and will be returning to the club in case his season at Sunderland doesn’t reach the number of games set in the contract.
