Jermain Defoe has revealed rap star Drake picked up the telephone to persuade him to swap Tottenham Hotspur for Toronto FC. Defoe joined the MLS side from Tottenham in 2014, after failing to get the prominence at Spurs he required.

Speaking to FourFourTwo, Defoe confirmed he received a telephone call from Drake with regards to moving to Toronto during his send spell at White Hart Lane. The Sunderland forward said he had no idea who he was speaking to when Drake called, because he didn’t recognise the number. Defoe revealed Drake told him to move to Toronto, and spoke about the pluses of a transfer.

“I picked up the phone and a person said ‘Hi, is this Jermain?’

“I said ‘Yeah, who’s this?’

“‘Drake’ he told me, ‘You need to come to Toronto, you’ll love it’.”

Defoe spent just one season in the MLS following his move from Tottenham to Toronto, but still scored 11 goals in 19 games for the Canadian team.

However, following reports he wasn’t settled in Toronto, Tim Sherwood brought Defoe back to Tottenham for a brief loan spell, but with the emergence of the likes of Harry Kane he was restricted to just two games.

In 2015 the forward signed for Sunderland with Jozy Altidore going the other way. The 34-year-old has since gone on to score 33 Premier League goals for Sunderland.

Altogether everyone: “You used to call me on my cell phone…”
