Liverpool’s talks with Roberto Firmino over a new deal are ‘progressing very well’ thanks to his ‘perfect’ relationship with Jurgen Klopp.
That’s according to journalist Florian Plettenburg, who says talks over a deal to extend his stay at Liverpool beyond 2023 are going well.
Firmino has been with Liverpool since 2015, when he joined in a €41m deal from Hoffenheim under previous manager Brendan Rodgers.
He initially struggled to impress under him but has shone under Klopp since his arrival, scoring 107 goals and registering 78 assists so far.
Firmino has been very much a key part of the success the Reds have enjoyed under the German coach in recent years, with his performances often helping to get the best out of the likes of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane either side of him.
There had been talk of a move away from Anfield this summer, with the Brazilian in the final year of his contract and potentially able to leave on a free transfer next year.
That, though, doesn’t appear to be on the cards, with Plettenburg reporting that talks over an extension are well underway and going well.
“Update Firmino: Been told that talks about a new contract beyond 2023 are progressing very well,” he wrote on Twitter.
“But no final steps at this stage. Player can really imagine extending. Relationship with Klopp should be perfect.”
