Celtic were heavily linked with a move for Lazio’s Gustav Isaksen in the summer transfer window.
The Hoops made an approach for the winger and there were reports that while Lazio had accepted the idea of the player’s exit to Celtic, it was the 23-year-old Dane who didn’t want to leave the Rome club for Brendan Rodgers’ side
The feeling was that if Isaksen had shown an openness to the switch, the transfer to Celtic could have happened.
The Dane has now insisted he wanted to stay at Lazio and fight for his place.
He spoke to Danish outlet TV Midtvset about how things were in the summer and said: “It would be boring to have spent a whole year getting to know everything in Lazio to go somewhere new and then have to learn it all again.”
He revealed that he had informed his agent, amidst the Celtic links, that he was very likely to stay at Lazio.
“So I told my agent that even if something exciting comes along, I would like to stay with 99% certainty. I feel that I have the potential to become an important man down there.”
The winger further went on to state that he is enjoying life in Rome, with new manager Marco Baroni bringing in a sense of calm at the club after the turbulent exit of Igor Tudor early in the summer.
He seems keen on fighting for his place at the Biancocelesti and the rejection to Celtic wasn’t personal.
