David Bates hasn’t had the experience he wanted when he left Rangers in 2018, and is currently living in a hotel as he continues to be frozen out at HSV Hamburg.

As Steven Gerrard’s side look to retain their title, and Rangers prepare for upcoming Europa League games, Bates is in a difficult situation.

That’s what BILD report today in a piece titled ‘end of the line hotel’, revealing how the defender is out of the picture at the German club.

They carry quotes from HSV super-fan Helm-Peter Dietz, who says he has “never seen such a sad player. Everyone gets a severance package here and can go. Not him – you can’t treat a person like that.”

Bates arrived from Rangers on a free transfer ‘with high hopes’ in 2018, but all those dreams have now been ‘dashed’.

He has a contract with the club until 2022 but plays no role with the professional squad and has been forced to keep fit by training with the U21s. He is not even allowed to play for the regional league team.

Furthermore, he finds himself currently living in the Mercure Hotel am Volkspark, a short distance from the club’s training ground.

He’s been told he has until 31 August to find a new club and will probably have to do so without a severance package, despite the club giving them to two other players recently.

They don’t want to do that with Bates, though, something which has already ruined a move, who has a ‘concrete request’ from one club that didn’t make sense for him financially. Having been given a good contract when he arrived from Rangers, a reluctance to give up that money is holding a move back.

While HSV will let him go for free, they don’t want to pay him his dues to allow that to happen before deadline day.

Bates, then, needs to decide if he’s happy taking less money or continue his current taste of life with the U21s and living in a hotel, as his post Rangers career quickly develops into a nightmare.
