Chelsea have joined Manchester United in the chase for Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong this summer.
Reports in the UK have stressed a deal to bring the midfielder to Old Trafford is not dead amid interest from the Blues.
With Manchester United and Chelsea in the mix to sign the 25-year-old, his exit from the Camp Nou would allow the La Liga side to make an attempt for Bernardo Silva.
Earlier reports suggested De Jong’s exit is necessary for Barca to sign the Manchester City player. In the past week or so, the Catalan media have insisted the Blaugrana can sign Silva irrespective of the Netherlands international’s situation.
This is repeated by Sport today, who give a background on the De Jong case and what could happen to him if Silva arrives at Barcelona.
It’s claimed the Dutchman ‘knows perfectly well’ Barca have negotiated with Manchester United and Chelsea. He’s also aware Xavi Hernández’s side have given permission to these two clubs to talk to him.
At the same time, Barcelona are pressuring the former Ajax man to take a pay cut, if he wants to continue at the club.
Should Silva arrive at the Camp Nou, Miralem Pjanić or Nico González will leave Barca. The Dutchman’s position could also be in danger.
Sport state De Jong will be in ‘serious trouble’ if Silva arrives. It could make him ‘pack his bags’ before the window closes.
Xavi and Barca president Joan Laporta are keen to sign Silva and the City player is aware of this.
If this report is true, Silva could indirectly end up helping Manchester United or Chelsea sign De Jong.
