As Portuguese newspapers today highlight the early success that Viktor Gyokeres has been having at Sporting, Arsenal are named quite a few times as one of the clubs who’ve been interested in him.
The way Record starts their story says a lot. They point out that the Gunners’ top scorer this season is Bukayo Saka, who has 8 goals in 23 games. He doesn’t get close to the Swedish striker, who scored 17 times in just 20 matches.
The newspaper claims Arsenal are attentive to Gyokeres, having watched him live ‘many times’, and are one of the clubs expected to battle for his signing.
The bad news for the Gunners is that the centre-forward reportedly has a ‘pact’ to stay at Sporting until the end of the season. So it seems not even his €100m release clause would be enough to free him in January, while a summer transfer could make ‘everyone win’.
Gyokeres has ‘given guarantees’ to Sporting that he won’t move in January.
Newspaper O Jogo feature a very similar story, claiming the Lions are ‘confident’ that Gyokeres will stay until the end of the season.
Regarding Arsenal, it’s said the Gunners have been following Sporting’s matches, having the striker ‘referenced’, although they already know him from his time with Coventry City in the Championship.
Mikel Arteta’s side are expected to have competition from Chelsea, not to mention the others that should join the race in the coming months.
