Victor Nilsson Lindelöf has said he joined Aston Villa this summer as they were the best option for his family.
Fotboll Skanalen cover comments from the defender today in which he discusses why Aston Villa were his choice this year.
The centre-back found himself as a free-agent this summer after Manchester United elected to not extend his contract.
He spent the majority of the summer being linked with clubs as a result. During this time, he weighed up his options as his agent looked for moves.
Lindelöf eventually joined Aston Villa on deadline day of window, signing a deal until 2027 that includes an option for both parties to extend by another year.
The move came as something of a surprise. Aston Villa were not really named among his potential suitors before moving on deadline day of the window.
Lindelöf has since explained that he picked them because his family could remain at home. He would be commuting from Birmingham to Manchester.
He has now explained that Aston Villa simply offered the best option for him and his family compared to other offers.
Aston Villa move preferred over Saudi option
“I had some interesting options that I talked to my family and agent about, but in the end, I ended up deciding that it was best to come back to England. I am very happy with that decision,” he said.
“The first month I told my agent not to call. I wanted at least a month where I could turn everything off and review what I wanted and didn’t want to do. The first month I did absolutely nothing and then I started to step it up a bit.
“I turned down a lot during the summer, but it turned out well in the end anyway. I felt it wasn’t right for the family and for me in terms of football.
“I’m not the type of person who wants to go to such a country (Saudi Arabia) and play football. From a family perspective, it doesn’t feel good for the children. I know that Maja, my wife, absolutely wouldn’t have wanted to move there. It was a pretty easy decision for me not to move there.”
