Matt Doherty looks set to find himself without a club months after leaving Tottenham to join Atlético Madrid on a free transfer.
That’s according to Marca, who say the full-back will not be retained by the Spanish club in the summer as they plan for the future.
The newspaper explains that those in charge at the Wanda Metropolitano are already planning for next season and deciding how Diego Simeone’s squad will be shaped.
Their plan is to build from the back and that will entail signing a centre-back and two full-backs, one for either side.
That means that defender Sergio Reguilón will be sent back to Tottenham following his loan deal while Doherty will be allowed to leave on a free. At the moment the club are ‘completely ruling out the continuity’ of the right-back.
He joined Atlético on a free transfer at the end of January after being released by Tottenham so the move could happen but he’s only managed one appearance in La Liga since then, totalling 12 minutes of football.
The move simply hasn’t worked out well for either party and it seems the club are now happy to let him go and move one once this season comes to an end.
