On Saturday evening, we covered breaking news from Portuguese newspaper Record that Sporting’s Manuel Ugarte has chosen to join Chelsea.
The Blues had made an improved salary offer of €3.5m a season, and despite that being less than the €6.5m proposed by PSG he’s chosen to join the London club.
The figures above are likely to be after tax, as is often the reporting way in Europe.
Sunday’s edition of Record gives themselves a well deserved pat on the back for getting the story first. They remain very confident and say Ugarte is expected to arrive next week for his medical tests with Chelsea.
His contract with the Premier League side will be for a minimum of six years.
Sunday’s edition of L’Equipe insists it’s not all over for PSG, although the French newspaper does concede Chelsea have the advantage.
Their slant is that Chelsea have agreed to pay a little more than the player’s €60m release clause and PSG, at this stage, have not. That contradicts the Portuguese claims which make it clear Ugarte simply prefers Chelsea.
There’s perhaps a little upset in PSG’s local media after they were so confident Ugarte would be moving to Paris.
