The loan that Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos had at Vasco da Gama is now over, and his farewell game wasn’t very good.
The Rio de Janeiro club had lost five straight games when facing Goiás on Thursday evening. With them standing 19th in the Brazilian League table, there was a clear tension from fans at the São Januário Stadium.
It even seemed like it could be a good match for Andrey Santos, as the Chelsea loanee thought he’d opened the scoring in the first half. His effort, however, was called of by VAR.
Then it all went wrong. Goiás scored a goal, and Andrey Santos was soon booked. That means that, despite Vasco having another game before the end of his spell, he had his third yellow and is now suspended.
With the 1-0 defeat confirmed, fans started throwing flares on the pitch and the stadium soon became a battle zone. The sacking of manager Mauricio Barbieri was soon was announced, and that was definitely not the farewell the youngster expected.
Andrey Santos is now set to return to London and complete the move to Chelsea. He had been signed in January, but due to the lack of a work permit, he was loaned back.
It’s believed that with his appearances in the Brazilian first division and in the U-20 World Cup, he shall now be allowed to feature in English football. This month, he also got his American visa, which reportedly means he’s set to feature in the Blues’ pre-season in the United States.
