Defender Joao Cancelo has been accused of ‘betrayal’ and being ungrateful to Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola following his move to Bayern Munich.
Cancelo was arguably the surprising move of the end of the January transfer window, leaving Manchester City to join Bayern Munich on loan until the end of the season.
The deal was one that few saw coming, with Cancelo having played a key role at the Etihad since a €65m move from Juventus in August 2019.
He’s made 154 appearances for the club since that point, scoring nine and assisting 22 as well as establishing himself as one of the best full-backs in Europe during that time.
It appears, though, he pushed for a move away from Manchester City after a falling out with Pep Guardiola, something AS are not impressed by.
They say that Cancelo’s move could only have happened if there was a ‘serious’ trigger for it, and ‘something important happened’ for the transfer to be sanctioned.
They say the surprise deal was ‘particularly striking’ and ‘almost personal’ despite Guardiola’s history of falling out with big stars.
Their feeling is that Cancelo owes a lot to the Spaniard, though, as he turned a good full-back into the ‘best full-back in the world’ but Cancelo’s response to that has been ‘very unappreciative’.
He’s turned his nose at the City boss and asked to leave, something the newspaper see as a ‘betrayal of his best mentor’, something he also did with Fernando Santos, his former Portugal boss.
Their belief is that Real Madrid ‘wanted nothing to do with him’ because of that, with them very much on Guardiola’s side following this shock departure.
