Earlier today, we covered the Portuguese media mentioning Newcastle United’s interest in Viktor Gyokeres, claiming the Magpies were one of the strongest candidates to sign the striker from Coventry City last summer.

It was Sporting who won the race for him, though, and after spending just €20m on his signing, his great start at the club is set to give them a big chance to make a huge profit with his sale.

As rumours of Gyokeres’ early exit have been surrounding the Lions, manager Ruben Amorim was today asked about the striker’s potential departure. Quoted by O Jogo, the manager claims only the release clause will take the player from the club.

“He has a clause. This year, as far as I know, someone will only leave with a clause. So if they pay €100m, he’ll have to go. Until then, he’ll be a Sporting player,” said Amorim.

In case Newcastle are indeed still interested in the player, that’s probably a reason for them to regret not having moving harder for his signing last summer.

Since his arrival at Sporting, Gyokeres has eight goals and two assists in nine appearances, continuing with the great potential he’d shown at Coventry City.

Besides Newcastle, the likes of AC Milan, Borussia Dortmund and Sevilla are also said to be interested in him, but it’s doubtful they’d have the funds required.
