German legend Lothar Matthaus has never been a big fan of Mesut Ozil, and he has made that known quite clearly in the past. The former Bayern Munich star has always been critical of Ozil, and has reiterated his opinion on the Arsenal midfielder.
Speaking to Kicker, Matthaus says Ozil is on his way to being world class, but still has a long way to go.
He said: “I’m still critical about Ozil. He is known for the decisive pass, and now he has become more dangerous. That’s why I see him on the way to world class – but that also includes the title for me. A half-step to the world class for me is still missing.”
Ozil has won the FA Cup twice since arriving at Arsenal, but hasn’t won the league yet. The 28-year-old has another 18 months left on his contract, and there isn’t any clarity on his future at the North London club.
Ozil has missed the last few games for Arsenal due to illness, but is expected to be back imminently. With 9 goals and 7 assists to his name this season, Ozil is certainly an important player for Arsenal but still hasn’t fully convinced Matthaus.
