Even though it seemed like Manchester United wouldn’t make any signings in the January transfer window, they’re today surprisingly linked to a La Liga player.

According to Marca, the Red Devils are interested in Espanyol striker Martin Braithwaite.

It’s said that Manchester United, as well as Chelsea, are ‘exploring the possibility’ of signing the player in the final days of the winter market.

Marca claims ‘the operation is underway’, with sources stating there’s ‘progress being made’ for the transfer to take place with a little discount.

Braithwaite’s contract with Espanyol includes a €7m release clause, and the negotiations reportedly taking place are aimed at the move costing less than that.

The negotiations with both Manchester United and Chelsea are said to be ‘open’, while Braithwaite already had an exit blocked in the summer and would again want a move now.

The 32-year-old has scored 12 goals in 22 LaLiga2 matches so far this season, with his latest strikes coming against Burgos, Villarreal B and Eldense.

At this stage of his career, a move to either Manchester United or Chelsea would obviously be hugely fortunate for the Dane. He currently has a contract lasting until June 2025 so presumably any new club would have to match or extend that duration.
