Defender Sergio Reguilón will be sent back to Tottenham from his loan spell at Atletico Madrid as he struggles to live up to expectations at the Wanda Metropolitano.
That’s according to Estadio Deportivo, who cover the player today and his struggles in Spain since his return in the summer.
The left-back moved to Atletico on loan in the summer as a replacement for Renan Lodi when it was made clear he was not a part of Antonio Conte’s plans at Tottenham.
He has barely featured under Diego Simeone this season, though, arriving at the club injured and struggling to establish himself despite returning from that.
Estadio say that he is ‘far from his best level of play’ and does not have Simeone’s confidence at this moment in time.
In fact he has been ‘one of the great disappointments’ of the season so far and it is unlikely that will change as it will be difficult for him to play between now and the end of the campaign given Atletico are now only competing in La Liga.
Reguilón has not been seen in an Atletico shirt since being sent off in a clash with Almeria, when he’d only been on the pitch for 22 minutes, something which lost him the trust of Simeone, who prefers Reinildo Mandava.
It means his season is now likely to be ‘one to forget’, with the chance to impress almost gone entirely and a permanent move not wanted.
Atletico didn’t negotiate a purchase option with Tottenham anyway and it seems the player ‘will return to London’ once his current deal expires.
