Late last week, we covered some comments from the Dutch media regarding the clash between Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins and Ajax’s Diant Ramaj.
The two collided early on in the Europa League clash, and many feels the Villa striker should have been sent off for the challenge even if came off worse out of it.
According to Mario Been, speaking on Goedemorgen Eredivisie, relayed by Voetbalzone, this was something that should not have gone unpunished, and went all out in his criticism of the refereeing during the clash against Aston Villa.
He said: “He is German, but this is typically Dutch. There has been far too little fuss about this, including the rest of the Ajax players. I think this is a red card. If that happens to an Italian team, they roll back and forth seven times and VAR might have a look.”
This view was corroborated by Hans Kraay on the show, who added an extra layer of disbelief to the way this was dealt with.
He claimed: “I think this is one of the biggest scandals of recent months. It is truly incredible. We know that thing are difficult at Ajax but if you can go up against a 10-man Aston Villa after 15 minutes, you have a chance.”
In the end, it’s Aston Villa who walked away with qualification to the next round, beating the Dutch side in a comfortable 4-0 scoreline.
They followed that up with a 1-1 draw against West Ham United at the weekend prior to the international break.
Aston Villa’s next game will be against Wolverhampton Wanderers on March 30th at home at Villa Park.
