Towards the end of the January window, it was clear that Newcastle United were confident enough to go after bigger targets, perhaps optimistic about their chances of survival under Eddie Howe.
They were well founded, after all, since the Magpies are currently 14th in the table, a good nine points clear of the relegation zone with 10 games to go, meaning this summer could see them spend big to ensure they at least finish in the top half (or better) next season.
Among their targets is going to be Fabián Ruiz, who is one of the likely sacrifices at Napoli in the summer due to his contractual situation, as his current deal expires in 2023.
No renewal appears to be close to being signed, meaning the Spaniard could be sold, with Newcastle already giving it a go in January.
This has been reported a few times, and Paolo Bargiggia, speaking to 1 Football Club on 1 Station Radio, relayed by Napolipiu, doubled down on that on Monday.
He said: “There was an offer in January from Newcastle, but the player wanted to wait for the big Spanish players. In the summer, there may be an offensive from Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid, who esteems him highly.”
Bargiggia then goes on to add that Napoli are already thinking about Ruiz’s replacement, with Nahitan Nández and Antonin Barak earmarked as likely successors.
It seems that Real Madrid are the midfielder’s preferred choice, but if the La Liga side don’t come knocking, perhaps a new attempt by Newcastle, who should be better placed to be more attractive next season, could bear fruit.
