Leeds United signed Isaac Schmidt from FC St. Gallen on a permanent transfer on summer deadline day.
The left-back has been limited to 71 minutes from 12 Championship games this season as Daniel Farke has used Junior Firpo as his first choice.
Schmidt’s difficult situation at Leeds didn’t stop him from receiving his first call up from Switzerland last month. During March’s international break, he insisted the Whites have assured him that he will have a key role at the club.
Fast forward to April and Friday’s edition of Swiss newspaper Blick looks at why the 25-year-old struggled at Leeds. According to the fullback, his late arrival at Elland Road probably made it difficult for him.
“The team was in full flow and at the top from the start. There was no reason for the coach to change anything,” he said.
Leeds will return to the Premier League and are likely to improve their squad in the summer window. The newspaper believes it will make it difficult for the defender to get regular opportunities at the English club.
Blick state there are ‘numerous interested parties’, without providing their details, and Schmidt could change clubs in the upcoming window.
The player has made it clear he’ll do “anything” to represent his country again and the report then states ‘even if that means he has to change clubs’.
Blick make it clear Schmidt is a bundle of energy with a thirst for life shining through: ‘If Isaac Schmidt’s enthusiasm could be converted into energy, the whole of Leeds would be powered. Just asking him about his favorite restaurant in the northern English city triggers strong emotions in the national team defender: “Sushi Nakamura is an incredible restaurant. The food is prepared right at your table. In front of your very eyes. Fantastic.”
‘Schmidt’s positive energy is contagious.’
