It would be ‘no surprise’ if Newcastle United move for Eintracht Frankfurt defender Willian Pacho in the near future, with the German club ‘convinced’ he’ll end up in the Premier League.
That’s according to Sport 1, who cover the player today and the likely developing interest in him after his impressive performances at the beginning of the season.
They explain that Pacho was only known to industry insiders before this season after the Ecuadorian won the double with Royal Antwerp and was one of the best players in the league.
He moved to Frankfurt thanks to the efforts of sports director Markus Krösche, who refused to give up on the transfer despite negotiations dragging on and not progressing at various points.
According to an earlier report from SportBILD, Eintracht are already assuming a sales price of €40m and were ‘convinced’ when they bought the defender that he’d end up in the Premier League in a few years.
Things appear to be going faster than that, though, and ‘everything is possible’ when it comes to a transfer. In fact, according to Sport 1, ‘it would be no surprise’ if Newcastle ‘came knocking’ on Krösche’s door.
Why Newcastle are named specifically isn’t mentioned but it’s likely they’re seen as a side who could afford that €40m price easily.
They’re also relatively short of centre-back at this moment in time, as the injuries to Sven Botman and Dan Burn have proved, with Eddie Howe now forced to rely on Jamal Lascelles and Paul Dummett alongside Fabian Schär.
That’s less than ideal and adding a new centre-back would be a smart move, with Pacho a potential option according to Sport 1.
