Far from a regular starter under José Mourinho, Erik Lamela’s future could be far away from Tottenham Hotspur going forward.
Yes, he can score rabona goals and get sent off all in the same game – a feat accomplished by few – but the Argentine has only started five Premier League fixtures, and with a contract ending in 2022, this summer might be the last chance for Daniel Levy to recoup some of his initial £27m expenditure.
That fee will have been fully amortised by now, since he was bought in 2013, but there is one club who seem keen to acquire the player’s services in the summer, and that’s Bologna in Italy.
How do we know this? Because their sports coordinator, Walter Sabatini, has openly admitted it.
Speaking to Il Resto del Carlino, relayed by TuttoMercatoWeb, the club chief said: “Lamela is one of the names we are looking into. Let me explain: we are trying to understand if there are possibilities to get there and there’s no guarantee. Of course, should Orsolini leave, there would be no better substitute. We’ll see.”
That’s as clear as it gets, and a lot will likely rest on how badly Lamela wants to leave London in the summer and how kind Levy is feeling.
After all, after eight years of service, an amicable and easy split could take place as a way of thanking the 29-year-old, but only time will tell on this one.
Either way, we’ll be keeping an eye on this.
