Since the start of 2022, we’ve seen the German media claiming that Newcastle United are interested in Bayer Leverkusen winger Moussa Diaby.
Recent reports claimed the Magpies were ‘getting serious’ with their pursuit, as their offer for his transfer was expected to arrive.
It turns out that as Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg today features a story on this chase, he claims Newcastle no longer seem so keen.
Even though Diaby is still on the Magpies’ list, that transfer ‘was not advanced’ in the last few months.
There’s some information from Plettenberg which could give a hint at the reason Newcastle are giving up on their pursuit, and that’s the price for this move.
It’s said that since Diaby is protected by a contract until 2025 and is a ‘key player’ for Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonson, the club value him at between €70 and €80m.
The winger, who has 14 goals and 11 assists this season, is valued by Transfermarkt at €50m, and the Bundesliga side may indeed be making an ambitious request for his transfer.
With Newcastle apparently not in the picture, it’s Manchester United who are said to be more keen on his signing, although they’re also likely to raise an eyebrow at the price.
