There’s a lot to like about Newcastle United’s Aleksandar Mitrovic. He’s been unreliable at various points throughout his career, had his fitness previously questioned by his own agent, and often doesn’t produce the goods.
But, when Mitrovic is on fire, he’s genuine cult hero material. Way before Will Grigg managed to be the most famous unused substitute in history, Newcastle United fans had been singing ‘Mitros on fire’, and the Serbian press loved it.
In Serbia, just like in Newcastle, they yearn for Mitrovic to be a hero, and he’s said all the right things ahead of tonight’s match against the republic of Ireland.
Serbia’s N1 quote the player as saying: “The Republic of Ireland has a good team. Most players we know from the Premier League, we know how to play, they were participants in the European Championship.
“I appeal to the fans that despite everything that happened in the past, come to the stadium and give us support. Most of the players on the team are boys who have shown how much they prize the jersey in the junior teams.
“We will fight to the last atom of strength. We need the wind at our backs. Give us this wind, we will not disappoint you, I’m sure of that.”
He’s so convincing, Serbia will hope Mitrovic is right this time.
