Turkish newspaper Hurriyet report Newcastle United have been a long-term admirer of Le Havre’s left back Umut Meraş and have joined the race to sign the player.

The 24 year old joined French Ligue 2 side at the start of the season from Turkish club Bursaspor and has been impressing with his performances since arrival.

Hurriyet exclusively report today Newcastle United have been following the player’s progress for a long time but now face competition from FC Porto.

He’s been a regular in Turkish national team, and was a key player in his country getting to Euro 2020, set to be played next year.

It’s currently unknown how much Le Havre will want from the likes of Newcastle United and Porto, but Hurriyet claim the Normandy side asked Galatasaray for €10m in January.

Meraş made 22 appearances for Paul Le Guen’s side this season before Ligue 2 came to a premature halt. His contract with Le Havre will expire at the end of June 2022.
