Atalanta have been quite efficient in the summer transfer window so far and that is quite evident from how they sealed a move for Bayer Leverkusen’s Odilon Kossounou.

The defender is set to join the club and it seems as if there was interest from both Newcastle United and Crystal Palace earlier in the transfer window.

That is what La Gazzetta dello Sport report today, mentioning previous interest from both Premier League sides.

They state that Newcastle and Palace had lacked the ‘speed and will’ to execute a deal for the Bayer Leverkusen man, even though the German champions knew that the defender’s time at the club was ending.

Kossounou’s performances had attracted a lot of attention and even Manchester United had asked for information in January, but they also never really went beyond that.

Palace need at least one new centre-back after the exit of Joachim Andersen. And Newcastle also need a player in that position, considering their interest in Marc Guehi.

The ship for a recognised and title winning centre-back in Kossounou has now sailed.
