Newcastle United are one of the English clubs ‘already dredging’ to sign Thomas Müller after this season.
That’s according to Bild, who have a report focusing on the attacking midfielder’s future at Bayern Munich beyond this season.
His current deal runs down in 2023 and speaking to this week’s edition of SportBild, the 32-year-old admitted there’s been no talks with the Bavarian club for a contract extension.
“No one has ever approached me from the club. So, you have to see what the future will bring,” he said.
When SportBild asked if he remains open to moving abroad, Müller said: “What appeals to me the most is sporting success and football at the highest level. That’s possible at Bayern. Or somewhere else.”
With doubts raised over the Germany international’s stay at the Allianz Arena beyond this season, Bayern chief Oliver Kahn had this to say on his contract situation.
“Whether that’s Manuel Neuer, whether that’s Robert Lewandowski, whether that’s Thomas Müller. Of course, it goes without saying that we exchange ideas with all these players in order to understand what they are thinking, what they want,” Kahn told Bild.
Müller joined Bayern in 2000 and after spending eight years in their academy, he was promoted to the first team. He has been a regular since then and has been important in helping the club win many cups, which includes two Champions League trophies.
There’s belief the player will ‘stay here [Bayern] anyway’, but Bayern have to be cautious since the Magpies are in the mix to take Müller. Bild claim Newcastle are ‘already trying to get’ the player, preferably in the summer.
Newcastle United will have to stay in the Premier League and then have a great project to tempt the player, if they have any chance of pulling this one off.
