Anderlecht allowed Chancel Mbemba to join Newcastle United in 2015, but the Congolese international has failed to feature regularly for the Tyneside club.

We carried multiple reports suggesting the 23-year-old is a transfer target for the top clubs in Belgium. He was attracting interest from his former club, Standard Liege and Club Brugge and the three clubs wanted to secure his services this summer.

Het Laatste Nieuws mentioned Anderlecht were doing everything possible to re-sign their former player. They even offered him a four-year contract. Today the same publication again claims club chairman Marc Coucke and sporting director Luc Devroe wanted to bring Mbemba back to the club.

Now the deal to sign the Newcastle player has “become impossible”. The report claims that he is now attracting interest from Italy and Portugal. FC Porto are keen on landing Mbemba and they are in advanced stages of negotiations with the Magpies.

Porto are now believed to be very close to securing the defender’s signature. HLN talks about a reliable Portuguese source who claims Mbemba to Porto could be “completed today or tomorrow”.
