Newcastle United star Fabian Schär has insisted there is nothing stopping him from extending his time at the club this summer.
Blick have an interview with the centre-back today in which they discuss his future and what he expects to happen.
The 33-year-old has remained a key player for Eddie Howe’s side this season, with 31 appearances in all competitions to date and 2658 minutes in total.
He’s only been out of the starting 11 in one of the 24 appearances he’s made in the Premier League, further emphasising his continued importance to the squad and Newcastle’s plans.
The Magpies are yet to resolve his future, though, with his current deal coming to an end in the summer and no new deal agreed as yet.
He’s already been at St James Park for seven years after arriving in a €4m deal from Deportivo La Coruna in July 2018 and does not appear to be close to stopping any time soon despite turning 33 in December.
Newcastle are likely to be cautious about that fact, with clubs now tending to avoid offering older players such as the defender longer term deals. Schär is aware of that and admits the length of contract is something they likely need to discuss.
“I like the English sense of humour,” he said.
“I like life in this city. The people are friendly. They also sense how much the club means to me now. I’m completely happy.
“We’ll see in the next few weeks. At 33, you’re no longer the youngest – especially in the Premier League. Considering the current situation, I can generally assume that we’ll find a good fit.
“I have certain wishes. We need to discuss whether my vision aligns with the club’s. That might be the most likely point to discuss.
“We’ll certainly sit down together soon and see how things proceed. From a sporting perspective, everything’s fine for me. It would be in my best interest to extend his time in the Premier League with Newcastle.”
