Following his completed transfer to Newcastle United, Sandro Tonali returned to Italy, where he’s sorting out some issues before the definitive move to England.
The midfielder was today spotted at Linate airport in Milan, and the local media was there to speak to him about his future.
Outlet TuttoMercatoWeb is the one bringing his quotes. First quizzed about his first days as a Newcastle player, Tonali said he’s excited about it.
“The first impressions are positive, I met the people who wanted me at all costs and who can’t wait to work with me,” said Tonali.
The midfielder was then asked about the decision to leave AC Milan, as he was always known for having big love for the club.
He’s now explained how hard that was for him.
“The most difficult of my career but it was a choice that had to be made now and we made it. Milan welcomed me like a son and I will never forget it for the rest of my life. I will thank them forever, I love everyone who worked with me and my former teammates. I’ll always watch Milan and I’ll always be their fan. It was a choice I had to make and I made it at the right time.”
Tonali had even said in the past that he wouldn’t leave Milan, and was asked about that turnaround. Then he promised to return to the Rossoneri.
“It’s been a long summer, the decision doesn’t come only after this season, but after the three I’ve been to Milan. It’s been a beautiful journey, I hope to be able to return to Milan one day and see the fans smile.”
Tonali joined Milan in 2020, first with them spending €5m to sign him from Brescia on a loan deal, then making the transfer permanent for €14.5m. The investment paid off just a few years later, as Newcastle spent big on his transfer.
He’s signed a five-year deal with the Magpies.
