While Newcastle United aren’t expected to splash the cash too much in January, the stories about them readying big bids continue to do the rounds.

The latest comes from Italy, where Il Messaggero, relayed by Calciomercato, claim the Magpies ‘would be ready to put €60m on the plate (including bonuses)’ for Serbian midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.

Not only that, but Newcastle are also allegedly ready to give the Lazio star a five-year contract worth ‘almost €10m/year’ as well as a €12m signing bonus.

Over in Rome, the newspaper claim the Serie A side have denied receiving any kind of offer for their player, and ‘reiterate the player is not for sale in January’ unless a larger offer is made, with that fee estimated to be €80-100m.

They still maintain some hope of renewing the player, but those chances are ‘getting thinner and thinner’, especially with his agent, Mateja Kezman, showing no signs of travelling to hold talks anytime soon.

Should this situation continue, it’s said the road towards an exit in June, where he will have just the one year left on his current deal ‘seems clear’.

This appears to be what Newcastle are trying to take advantage of, and if they can lure him in January with an enticing offer, they would manage what other clubs, such as Manchester United and Arsenal, have failed to do in years.
