Two days ago, Akşam explained that Newcastle United will make an official attempt to sign Fenerbahçe’s İrfan Kahveci in the summer window. The Magpies are joined by a few other clubs, including Sevilla, in the transfer race.
The winger’s former coach, Mustafa Kaplan, said he will leave the Turkish club at the end of this season and Sevilla want him. Newcastle have to speed up their efforts if they wish to secure his services.
Journalist Yağız Sabuncuoğlu has talked about Newcastle’s interest in Kahveci on Sports Digitale’s YouTube channel, relayed by Karar.
According to Sabuncuoğlu, Eddie Howe’s side and the Spanish club want the 28-year-old in the next window.
Newcastle seem to have taken further steps as the journalist says they have reached out to the Turkey international’s agent. There’s no clarity on how the discussion between the two parties progressed.
Kahveci has impressed for the Istanbul club this season, scoring 18 goals and registering 12 assists from 45 matches.
Sabuncuoğlu claims Fenerbahçe won’t let their star leave for less than €25-30m and adds that ‘it’s ‘very difficult’ for Newcastle and Sevilla to meet their demand since the player has just over a year left on his contract.
It’s possible that Newcastle contacted Kahveci’s agent to ask him to convince Fenerbahçe to lower the price.
Sevilla, and their current finances, wouldn’t be able to get anywhere that level of money. Indeed they’d likely ask for a loan initially, with a plan for a very restricted market this summer.
