Even though Newcastle United stand out as the favourites for the signing of Memphis Depay from Barcelona, the Catalan media still aren’t very sure he’s leaving the Camp Nou in January.
The forward’s contract with Barça expires at the end of the season, and despite the club’s will of cashing in with his sale next month, he could just choose to stay and walk for free at the end of the season.
This possibility is today highlighted by outlet Sport where it’s claimed that even though Newcastle are in ‘pole position’ to sign him, that’s not what he wants at the moment, because his intention is to move as a free agent and fight for higher wages.
According to Sport, the Magpies ‘will try to convince him’ of making the move.
The report even sounds confident the English club could succeed in that, as they’re a side with ‘financial muscle’ who are willing to get closer to the top clubs in the Premier League.
Since all Depay is looking for is a bigger salary, it doesn’t seem like such a great problem for Newcastle to make him an attractive offer.
Plus with Barcelona practically forcing his sale, a transfer fee shouldn’t be an issue either, with it recently reported that €10m could do the trick.
