Earlier this week, we covered claims from the Turkish press explaining that Newcastle United have made official contact regarding a deal for Fenerbahçe’s İrfan Kahveci.
On Wednesday, Sözcü Gazetesi stated the Magpies are pleased with the winger’s displays and will make an official attempt to sign him in the summer window.
Newcastle’s desire to sign the 28-year-old is further backed up by Türkiye Gazetesi, who add the Magpies are joined by Sevilla and Rennes in the transfer race.
He’s scored 18 goals and registered 12 assists from 45 games in all competitions, and that has helped him attract the attention of Newcastle and other clubs. Despite this, the report claims Kahveci wants to stay at the Istanbul side, in order to become a legend there.
That may not be the case and the attacker could leave Fenerbahçe at the end of this season, according to his former coach, Mustafa Kaplan. The latter managed Kahveci when the pair were at Gençlerbirliği.
“We have brought very important players to Turkish football. One of them is İrfan. If the clubs agree, he will probably go abroad at the end of the season. Sevilla want him but he also has suitors from Italy,” he said, as quoted by Türkiye Gazetesi.
Kaplan’s comments would indicate that Newcastle need to step up their efforts, in order to get ahead of the competition, if they wish to sign the player in the next window.
