Now that Newcastle United are almost guaranteed a spot in next year’s Champions League, the staff behind the scenes at St James’ Park have gone into overdrive.
They know this summer will be important for the Magpies, who will need to add strength in depth at many positions, which is why a pursuit of Lovro Majer, courtesy of Foot Mercato, would make sense.
The Croatia midfielder has become a target for Newcastle in recent weeks, and with him falling out of favour at Stade Rennais, a transfer could be on the cards.
It’s said that the Premier League club are one of ‘several clubs interested in his profile’, and Eddie Howe’s side have ‘come for information not too long ago’.
Their Ligue 1 counterparts were rather honest with him, and explained their midfielder has ‘an exit pass’ this summer, and would cost a fee of ‘around €40m’.
The reason for that amount is a chunk of the sale would go to Dinamo Zagreb, so Rennes want to maximise their own income in the process.
Such a fee shouldn’t be too much of an issue for Newcastle, but it all depends how serious they are about getting him and whether or not they have other big transfers planned.
