Newcastle United could get Arsenal defender Konstantinos Mavropanos for €12.5m if he were relegated from the Bundesliga with Stuttgart this season.
That’s according to Heidenheimer Zeitung, who say the centre-back would be sold if there was an ‘urgent need of money’.
Mavropanos is currently on loan with the German side for the second straight season, having also spent last year with them, playing a key role in their return to the Bundesliga.
They have an option to sign the defender on a permanent basis with club chief Sven Mislintat negotiating a special deal with Arsenal in which the German club have a purchase obligation if they avoid relegation and a purchase clause if they do not.
They know they could make a quick profit on the 24-year-old, and there were reports to that nature in January when Newcastle emerged as admirers.
They were thought to be keen amid their hunt for a new centre-back but were told it would take as much as €30m to make a deal happen.
Heidenheimer Zeitung say that has now changed, though, stating Mavropanos will be valued at €25m should Stuttgart stay in the Bundesliga and an ‘interested buyer’ comes along.
If they were relegated, then Mavropanos ‘could be sold for half that amount’ if Stuttgart, as a second division club, were in ‘urgent need of money’.
The player, of course, will have his say on the matter, but he has made it clear he would like to play in the Premier League again after his stint with Arsenal.
That certainly gives Newcastle a chance of getting their man and for a much better price than they were being quoted back in the January transfer window.
Whether they remain interested remains to be seen but Mavropanos could be a low cost option to bolster their defence, should Stuttgart be relegated this season.
