Newcastle United are evaluating a proposal for Benfica defender António Silva as they look for a partner for Sven Botman this summer.
That’s according to Jornal de Noticias, who report that Newcastle are preparing a bid that would be worth €50m, half of the player’s release clause.
According to the newspaper Newcastle are looking at the possibility of making a proposal to Benfica worth €50m, which would be made up of a fixed component of €35m and the rest in variables depending on the Magpies’ performances and the player reaching certain goals.
That deal would mean they’d only be offering half of the release clause currently in the player’s contract, suggesting Benfica would reject it should it be offered formally.
JN, though, say that there is the possibility of the Portuguese side ‘trying to up the ante’ if and when the proposal comes to them.
In other words, they might be slightly open to selling the 20-year-old and encouraging Newcastle so that they bid higher and get closer to that release clause. What figure they might accept isn’t mentioned.
It all depends on whether Newcastle actually make a formal offer but they’re certainly thinking about it.
