Back in the summer window, when Real Madrid winger Marco Asensio entered the final year of his contract with the club, the likes of Arsenal and Newcastle United were linked to him.

Even though Premier League clubs were said to be interested in the 26-year-old, the player was still rumoured to be negotiating a new deal with the Santiago Bernabéu side, and ended up staying with them for the 2022/23 season.

Since the extension wasn’t agreed and Asensio’s departure from Real Madrid as a free agent next year is a real possibility, Mundo Deportivo today writes about his situation. And they claim there’s now bigger competition for his signing.

The outlet recalls that the likes of Arsenal, Newcastle and Milan ‘sounded with strength’ for him in the summer, but now Barcelona are interested in him as well. The Catalan side have been building a strong relationship with the player’s Jorge Mendes, and that could help them to find a deal.

With Real Madrid having the risk of losing the player for free, a January move is seen as the ‘last opportunity’ to make money with his departure.

Since it’s obvious the Santiago Bernabeu side wouldn’t like to strengthen their biggest rivals, perhaps that’s a good chance for Arsenal and Newcastle to try to find a deal with them in January.
