Newcastle United are in the picture to sign Napoli star Lorenzo Insigne, according to reports from Italy.
The forward has just over six months left on his contract and there has been no progress in talks between him and the Serie A side over a new deal.
For the past few weeks, Major League Soccer side Toronto FC have been credited with an interest in the 30-year-old. The Magpies have now been thrown into the mix and these claims are made by journalist Raffaele Auriemma during Radio Marte’s program, Si gonfia la rete.
Auriemma claims it is ‘very complicated’ for the Italy international to leave Napoli in the winter market and he could instead leave his current employer as a free agent next summer. The attacker has already received proposals from Eddie Howe’s side and Toronto FC.
According to the journalist, the MLS side have offered a deal that includes a net salary of €11m per year. From Serie A, only Inter Milan have Insigne on their agenda and from England, Newcastle get a mention.
It’s explained the Tyneside club have ‘offered’ a deal worth €7m [net] per year to the Napoli captain. Faced with these two proposals, Auriemma points out the player could move to Toronto.
That, however, doesn’t mean Insigne is certain to move to the MLS. Auriemma is of the belief the leaks of Toronto FC’s offer, mostly from the player’s camp, could be used to put pressure on other European clubs.
