Over the years, as Pep Guardiola has tried to improve his Manchester City squad, one of the names often linked with a move to the Etihad has been Alessandro Bastoni.

It always made a lot of sense, as the Italian is a left-footed ball-playing defender, which is something of a rarity these days in the world of football.

However, despite Manchester City always being interested, according to Italian media reports, nothing major ever happened, and the player himself, speaking to TuttoMercatoWeb, explained just how close, or not, these rumours were.

Ahead of Inter Milan facing Guardiola and his team in the Champions League final, the centre-back was asked if he was ever ‘close’ to joining the Premier League side.

He replied: “There was never anything concrete. I’m happy to be able to play this final with this shirt.”

Therefore, it’s fair to say that Manchester City, while they might have been interested in Bastoni from afar, never really made an effort for the player, or if they did, he wasn’t ready to entertain the idea of a move.
