Fenerbahce could make a late move for Everton midfielder Andre Gomes after manager Ismail Kartal approved the transfer.
That’s according to Sports Digitale and journalist Yağız Sabuncuoğlu, who say the Everton midfielder is very much a target that Kartal would approve of.
Sabuncuoğlu has been on something of a tweeting spree regarding Gomes over the last few days, first reporting in an exclusive on the 11th that Fenerbahce were interested in the Everton midfielder.
This was followed by Sports Digitale then quoting the journalist as saying that the Turkish side’s management will not make any moves for players unless they are approved by manager Ismail Kartal.
He added that Gomes had been added to a list of potential targets by the Fenerbahce boss, with it stated that ‘the decision of commons sense’ was also applied. Quite what that means isn’t made clear, but either way, signing Gomes from Everton had been approved.
This was again backed up by Sabuncuoğlu, who stated that Ismail Kartal had ‘approved the possible’ transfer of Gomes before Turkey’s transfer deadline on the 15th.
The question now is whether they open talks with Everton for a possible transfer, with it not yet mentioned if Fenerbahce want a loan deal or a permanent move.
From experience it is likely to be the latter given Turkish clubs rarely ever want to spend their own money, particularly when it comes to signing players from the Premier League.
With Gomes in the final year of his deal at Everton, though, such a move would make little sense from an Everton perspective as they’d be losing out next summer when he becomes a free agent.
The solution would be a loan with a mandatory purchase option for Fenerbahce but again, that isn’t the sort of deal Turkish clubs tie themselves up in.
It seems likely to be an evolving situation to keep an eye on in the coming days, with the approval of the manager sure to lead to some talks with Everton at the least.
