Aston Villa are keen on appointing Sevilla chief Monchi as their new sporting director and this has been widely covered in the Spanish press in the past few days.
ABC Sevilla now state ‘there’s no turning back’ for the Spaniard after he informed the La Liga side about his desire to leave them.
It’s claimed the Europa League winners have ‘made it clear’ to Aston Villa that his €2.5m clause must be paid to sanction his exit.
In addition to this, there’s a clause in Monchi’s contract that he has to inform Sevilla three months in advance if he wishes to join another club. He hasn’t done in this case and the report states it would mean another €3m penalty could also be applied.
Monchi was aiming to leave for free but the Andalusian club cannot let that happen, also because they are answerable to their shareholders and partners.
Over at Marca, they say Monchi’s exit from Sevilla is in the ‘final stretch’. The La Liga side want to end the drama around their director in the best way possible and ‘maximum of 48 hours’, meaning ‘before the weekend’.
After expressing his desire to leave Sevilla and starting negotiations with Aston Villa, Marca say ‘all that remains is to reach an agreement’. Unai Emery’s side want to take him for free while the Spanish club remains firm that his clause has to be paid.
They end their report by stating: ‘The negotiation is not closed yet. There are a few steps left to finish between Thursday and maybe Friday.’
With all parties wanting to end the saga soon, we could hope a solution is found before this weekend.
