The Bergamo edition of Sunday’s Corriere della Sera has a headline saying Manchester United want Marco Carnesecchi.

First off, who is Marco Carnesecchi? The 24-year-old is Atalanta’s goalkeeper, he made himself first choice in the 2023/24 season and carried that into the recently concluded campaign, where he started every Serie A game he was available for.

Carnesecchi has represented Italy at every youth level up to U21, and whilst he’s trained with the senior side and was in the most recent squad, he’s yet to make his debut for Italy’s national side.

Corriere della Sera state the stopper is ‘coveted’ by Manchester United, and that he would be a worthy successor should Andre Onana be sold this summer.

Atalanta value their young goalkeeper at more than €40m, and Manchester United have experience of how difficult the Bergamo club are to negotiate with. They went through a long process when taking Rasmus Højlund and ended paying more than they will have planned to do so.

Carnesecchi recently extended his contract until 2028, so La Dea are under no pressure.

How strong Manchester United interest really is would surely be questionable at this point. There’s a chance the player is one of a number of options should Onana be sold.
