With the situation surrounding David De Gea still not entirely clear, Manchester United need to plan for a future without him.

The Spaniard is the clear number one under Erik ten Hag these days, but with Dean Henderson set to ultimately return to Old Trafford at the end of the season, perhaps a change of the guard will take place.

Still, Manchester United continue to be linked with goalkeepers around Europe, with Diogo Costa often mentioned, while another in Portugal pops up from time to time.

That’s exactly what’s happened on Friday, with Greek journalist Giannis Chorianopoulos, taking to Twitter to discuss the situation around Benfica shot stopper Odysseas Vlachodimos.

The Greece international has just renewed his contract with the Portuguese club until 2027, but the reporter makes it clear that ‘doesn’t mean a lot’ in terms of his future.

That’s because ‘many clubs are monitoring’ him for the summer transfer window, and that includes Manchester United.

The 28-year-old has been mentioned a number of times in the same breath as the Red Devils in the past, without anything ever taking place, but with De Gea’s contract at Old Trafford still to be renewed (or the option for a further year triggered), perhaps this year could be the year?

Ultimately, it will likely be up to Ten Hag, as he knows exactly what he will be wanting from his long-term goalkeeper at Manchester United.
