In October, we’ve seen Manchester United once again being linked to Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa, with several stories from the Portuguese media claiming the Red Devils were interested in the signing.
Since the player was protected by a contract until 2026 and a €60m release clause, there weren’t clear signs that the rumour could be a play for a new deal, especially because he had indeed been doing very well for the Dragons, including in the Champions League, and was said to be a name to replace David De Gea at Old Trafford.
It turns out that, as announced by Porto, Costa has now extended his contract with the club.
The rumours about Manchester United aren’t mentioned in a single newspaper, as all they do is to cover the official statement, with club president Pinto da Costa talking about the ‘sharks’ who wanted him.
“I hope they are on the high seas,” said the president (via O Jogo)
“I want Diogo to continue to be an idol at FC Porto and for the symbiosis between him and the club to remain forever.”
Diogo Costa now has a contract until 2027, and his release clause went to €75m.
So if Manchester United still want him, it’s very likely that Porto will raise his price tag, and maybe even demand that bigger figure for his sale.
