Manchester United have decided to ‘step up’ their pursuit of PSV Eindhoven star Cody Gakpo and are ‘serious’ about signing him in the January transfer window.
That’s according to Foot Mercato, who say the current asking price is €60m but could rise if he continues to impress with the Netherlands at the World Cup.
The website reports that Manchester United have stepped up their ‘courting’ of the Dutch forward, who has 13 goals and 17 assists in 24 games this season.
They already tried to sign the player in the summer window but targeted others, with Gakpo eventually staying in the Eredivisie despite offers from elsewhere.
Manchester United have remained ‘serious in the race’ for his signature, though, and now want to sign him in January.
PSV are asking for a sum of around €60m for the youngster but that price could rise if Gakpo continues to earn plaudits during the World Cup after scoring in the 2-0 win over Senegal.
Erik ten Hag is believed to be a big fan of Gakpo and ‘values’ the fact he can play up front, as a number ten or on either wing, something which has made the player a ‘priority’ signing for him.
Indeed he sees him as an ideal replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo after he left the club and he’s now ready to ask Manchester United to make a ‘second attempt’ for his signature
It’s believed that they will ‘go on the offensive’ in an attempt to beat the competition to his signature, and ‘have the means’ to match PSV’s demands and get a deal over the line.
