Thursday saw a claim Manchester United have made a late offer to sign Facundo Pellistri from Peñarol. The 18-year-old, who can play on the right wing, is extremely highly rated and has been linked with the Old Trafford club previously.

Earlier this week he had been expected to join Lyon, however, there’s been a few issues preventing the conclusion of a deal.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side were said to have a ‘written’ offer, and also proposed a five year contract to the player. Despite that, Lyon were still thought to be ahead in the race.

There later came claims from Uruguay that the youngster had gone AWOL from his club. Peñarol have a secure bubble to help prevent Covid-19 infections, and that Pellistri had left it meant he’d need to go through a quarantine process before being available to player again.

He left the bubble to try and force a move, with Lyon still thought likeliest.

Calciomercato now have an update.

They say Manchester United are ‘serious’ about Pellistri and his compatriot Edinson Cavani. According to the claims, the English club have today ‘continued negotiations’ with Peñarol, trying to get ahead of Lyon.

Talks are also said to be continuing with Cavani, but there’s a ‘difference of views’ over the length of any potential contract for the free agent.

Benfica, who came close to signing Cavani earlier in the window, are said to have ‘returned to the flame’.

Back to Pellistri, Uruguayan journalist Sebas Giovanelli is reporting the player has agreed a five year deal with Manchester United, but there’s still disagreement between the two clubs, with his current side wanting him to stay until January, and the Red Devils wanting him now.
